About Wacken

Wacken Open Air is the world's largest heavy metal festival, held every summer in the tiny northern German village of Wacken. Around 85,000 metalheads descend on farmland in Schleswig-Holstein for four days of stages, beer pipelines and pure metal community.

Typical weather

Late July to early August in Schleswig-Holstein is mild and unsettled North Sea weather: highs of 20–23°C, nights of 12–14°C, and a high chance of passing showers. Hot, dry weeks happen but are not the norm — Atlantic fronts cycle through often.

How weather shapes Wacken

The site is flat, low-lying farmland with heavy soil that turns to mud quickly. The 2023 edition became infamous when days of rain forced organisers to halt arrivals — 'Muddy Wacken' is now part of the festival's folklore. Rubber boots are basically uniform, and the open fields offer almost no shelter from wind or sun.
