Reading Festival is one of Britain's oldest music festivals, held on Richfield Avenue beside the Thames over the August bank holiday. Sister festival to Leeds, it draws around 90,000 people a day for a rock, indie and hip-hop line-up that has launched generations of UK youth culture.
Late August in the Thames Valley is the tail of British summer: highs of 20–23°C, nights of 12–14°C, and a moderate chance of showers as autumn fronts start to push in. Warm, sunny weekends are common, but so are sudden downpours.
The site sits on a Thames flood plain, so heavy rain pools fast and the walkways between stages and campsites get churned up quickly. Cool nights catch first-timers out — temperatures can drop sharply after the headliner — and the open riverside fields mean wind whips through the campsites when fronts roll in.
