Outside Lands is San Francisco's flagship music festival, held every August in the western end of Golden Gate Park. Around 75,000 people a day attend three days of rock, indie, hip-hop and electronic music, paired with a renowned food, wine and cannabis programme.
Early August in western San Francisco is Karl-the-Fog season: highs of just 17–19°C, nights of 12–14°C, near-zero rainfall, but dense afternoon fog and cold ocean wind blowing in over the park.
Outside Lands is famous for the fog — visibility drops, hoodies and beanies come out, and first-time attendees from out of town are routinely caught underdressed. The cool, damp air actually helps the crowd stay comfortable for long sets, and the cypress and eucalyptus trees of Golden Gate Park give the festival a uniquely sheltered, woodland feel that other US festivals never have.
