Lollapalooza takes over Chicago's lakefront Grant Park every summer with four days of pop, hip-hop, rock and electronic music. Around 100,000 attendees a day make it the marquee American urban festival.
The turn of July into August in Chicago is full Midwestern summer: highs of 27–30°C, warm humid nights of 19–22°C, and a recurring threat of fast-moving thunderstorms off Lake Michigan.
Heat and humidity are exhausting in a downtown park with limited shade — water stations and the lakefront breeze are heavily used. Severe storms are the real disruptor: Lollapalooza has been briefly evacuated multiple times when lightning approached the city, and organisers monitor radar all weekend.
