Hellfest is France's flagship metal festival, held in the village of Clisson in the Loire valley. Around 60,000 people a day fill seven stages across four days of metal, hard rock and extreme music, in a site famous for its elaborate, gothic-industrial production.
Late June in the Loire valley is warm early summer: highs of 24–28°C, nights of 14–16°C, and a low-to-moderate chance of thunderstorms. Heatwaves of 35°C+ have become more frequent in recent editions.
Heat is now the dominant Hellfest weather story — the 2019 edition saw the temperature push 40°C and organisers had to add water points and shaded zones. The exposed site offers little natural shade, and a heavy black-clad dress code makes it worse. When storms do roll in, they tend to be short but intense, and the dusty fields turn slick fast.
